Jan. and Feb. Learning

PE - Cara continues to be quite active on a daily basis with a variety of activities. Following is an outline of her physical activities:

Daily ~ Outdoor play which includes: skipping (with skipping songs), scootering, biking, hopscotch, running.

Weekly ~ 2-3 times/week Cara gets playground time which includes a lot of climbing, hanging and running. During January, Cara participated in swimming lessons. She is now able to complete the front crawl across the swimming pool (15m). Also, Cara was going skating at least once a week during the month of January. She is able to skate very fast, but needs to work on her gliding motion. :) Cara started gymnastic classes in February and will continue into April. I will include an assessment report for both swimming and gymnastics in the end of the year samples.

Other physical activities include EnergyPlex cube time, living room gymnastics and nature walks.

We read and discussed this book together: Get Some Exercise! ~ Angela Royston

The focus is mainly on the changes that happen to your body when exercising and how all the different parts of the body are used to help you move.

Health and Career
Bible ~ Cara continues to learn biblical truths through bible lessons related to her unit studies, NEST videos, scripture memory, Children's Book of Prayers, the story of Moses and more recently, the book of Matthew.

Roles and Responsibilities in the Family ~ Cara is a cheerful helper around the home. She is eager to help clean and tidy the house before guests arrive. She performs her morning and meal time routines well. I can tell that she is growing up.

Safety ~ Cara completed all of the Burn Awareness lessons from this website: Burn Awareness. She also entered the poster contest. This was the first time that she has entered a poster contest. As seen in the slideshow of her learning samples, she completed her first poster in about 10 minutes. Together we discussed what was well done and what needed improvement. A few days later she worked on her second poster and included all of the elements that we discussed - clear message (words need to be printed clearly/ make title bold), use bright colours, add a border. I was so pleased with the process that took place and her poster turned out lovely. Every participant wins a prize, so that will be exciting for her!

We also have read and discussed some library books related to strangers and neighbourhood safety.

Goal Setting ~ Cara understands the concept of goal setting. Each month she sets a goal, but she needs to work on figuring out how to reach her goal. Also, I would like to see her set goals outside of "physical" goals i.e.run faster, swim further etc.

Friendships ~ Recently Cara has experienced a couple of losses in friends. Her best friends across the street moved away and her best friend at school is going to a new school. She has put together a picture frame collage of her friends/cousins and has it hung in her bedroom. She also makes cards and pictures for one friend on a weekly basis and sends it in the mail.

Fieldtrips:
Cara is a member of the Young Naturalist Club of BC - she is working towards her bronze badge. Monthly, there are events scheduled with other members in Kelowna. She attended a Science day at UBCO in January where she got to see plant and animal models, do a chemistry experiment with colour, view a ton of animal and plant species, explore water samples from Mill Creek and drill a piece of wood from a tree to study it's rings!

Eeco Center ~ About 1-2 times/month Cara goes to storytime at the Eeco center. The stories are related to wildlife and a craft is also completed. She has learned a little about spiders and mice so far ...
